Santa Monica Proper is the first new destination hotel to debut on the Westside of Los Angeles in over a decade. The luxury lifestyle property makes an architectural statement seven blocks from the waves of the Pacific Ocean, spanning two stylistically disparate buildings linked by an artfully crafted bridge. Part of Santa Monica Proper’s home dwells in a Spanish Colonial Revival structure, and when combined with the hotel’s contemporary half, this Y-shaped retreat forms a welcoming and soothing construct that optimizes the area’s abundant sunlight and ocean breezes. In addition to offering the neighborhood’s only indoor-outdoor rooftop playground, complete with a pool, cabanas, and a restaurant-bar, the hotel serves up Californian- and Mexican-inspired cuisine from an open kitchen at Onda restaurant, a collaboration between celebrated chefs Jessica Koslow (the 2019 James Beard Award Winner behind Sqirl restaurant) and Gabriela Camara (behind Contramar and Cala). Add the interior designs of visionary Kelly Wearstler and the hotel becomes a design statement through-and-through, with sandy palettes, light hardwood floors, and organic materials complimented by the works of emerging L.A. artists such as Ben Medansky, Morgan Peck, and Tanya Aguiniga.
